Insects saved this week

Following the lead of Martin Usborne and his blog www.yeartohelp.com I'm trying to help as many animals as I can. So far, this has been my best effort. I think I'm going to have to try a little harder.

 I brushed off the dust and cobwebs that were hindering his ability to walk.

 Isn't he gorgeous? In an odd sort of way.

 Another of the same type of bug as the first photo. I seem to find a lot of these in the house.

A really big one.

I forgot to take a picture of the really big scorpion that I rescued from the cat's patio. Luckily before the cats saw it.

X-rated! I didn't interrupt them.

Diva challenge #91 String theory v.XIV- Stripes

My father in a mysterious uniform

My father wasn't in the army because he had a bad heart. So what is he doing in these uniforms? He was in the CCC's (Civilian Conservation Corps.). But I don't think they wore uniforms like this. And why would he have a rifle with a bayonet? 

I posted these pictures a while back and I think I asked the same question. Maybe this time someone will come up with an answer.

A bad day for chicken soup

Nancy brought a pot of soup over that she made with my left-over chicken carcass. We were going to have it after she drove me to the eye doctor and we did some shopping.

It was cooking all morning while I was at my art class.

We left for the eye doctor, got a few miles and Nancy remembered that she hadn't turned off the stove. We went back and I ran in and turned it off. We were gone about 3 hours. Came back to a terrible smell. Lifted off the top of the pot to lots of smoke. 

 I'm not very familiar with my stove, as anyone who knows me, knows. But I still can't see how I did this. It must be my cataracts!

The house smelled so bad that we had to cancel our 4:00 social hour with Helen and Beth. It was the one cold day that we couldn't have sat out on the deck....hence the chicken soup.

It's been 4 days and the smell still hasn't gone away.

My ancestors on the $10,000 bill

I wasn't sure if it was true that the painting which includes my ancestors (see previous post) was really on the back of the $10,000 bill, or if one really exists. 

It is true. Apparently they're very rare and mostly only owned by collectors.

Embarkation of the Pilgrims at Delft Haven, Holland, July 22, 1620, by Robert W. Weir. Oil on canvas, 12' x 18.' Located in the Capitol Rotunda. Placed December 21, 1843. In 1836, the United States government commissioned Robert W. Weir to paint The Picture of the Embarkation of the Pilgrims from Delft Haven in Holland "for filling the vacant panels in the rotunda of the Capital" in Washington, D.C. It was one of several large scale (12’ x 18’) paintings chosen to represent significant historical moments leading to the founding of the American Republic. Completed in 1843, it depicts the Pilgrim families gathered around their pastor, John Robinson, for a farewell service on the deck of the Speedwell before its departure from Holland. Weir worked on the Embarkation for over seven years. The left lower couple in the front, kneeling on the deck are depictions of Susanna and William White.

I just found this. I knew my great-great-great (etc,) grandparents came over on the Mayflower but I had no idea they were in a painting and that it is hanging in the Capitol.
Apparently it's also on the back of the U.S. $10,000 bill. I didn't know there was such a thing.

Diva challenge # 87-Pinwheels for Peace

Pinwheels for Peace are in honor of International Peace Day- Sept. 21.

I wonder if it means anything that it's also my birthday? I guess I'm pretty peaceful.
And I'm always thinking about peace in the world. Not too hopeful lately, though.

"Why can't we all just get along?" Thank you Rodney King, for leaving us this thought to remember you by.

If only the religions of the world would do what they're supposed to be doing and concentrate on peace instead of some of the silly things they get fixated on.

Diva Zentangle challenge #86- Break Free

Jessie Homer French's Art Opening and meeting Billy Al Bengston and Don Bachardy

 Jessie and some of her wonderful paintings. I love her dog cut-outs. The theme of this show was "Stealth Bombers".  You'll see some of them in the upper left hand corner of the painting.

Amy is one of my niece, Megan's, best friends. They were college room mates at Emerson in

Boston. We met Jessie and her husband, Robin, when we went to Megan's graduation. Sometime after that we stayed with Jessie and Robin when they lived in Victoria, B.C.

We enjoyed chatting with Billy Al, too. He was fun to talk to. We discussed my old art school, Chouinard, and his friend Ed Ruscha. I knew Ed slightly in 1957 when we both were there. I knew his girlfriend better than I knew Ed but couldn't remember her name. I just remember she had been a cheerleader in high school. I called her a "pom pom" girl and he said- yes, she sure was. This amused both of us. Billy said he remembered her and even remembered her name. Someone else started talking to us and I didn't get her name. We talked about many more things than this--about when he lived in Victoria near the Frenches, his daughter, etc.

After the blonds left Nancy and Don had a conversation. Don had painted a portrait of Megan several years ago and Nancy had always wanted to see it. He invited her to his studio to see it. She'd love to buy it but it's probably out of her price range.

 The La Cienega street scene on gallery opening night. It was packed. When I lived in L.A. we often went to the gallery openings. I haven't been there in more than 30 years and it seems to be in a whole new part of La Cienega- almost in Culver City. It was quite different than I remembered.

Tangling spider, on drugs

My blog friend, Christine, sent me an article about a scientific experiment where they gave different drugs to spiders to see how it affected their webs. How did they do this you might ask. They said they put a little drop on their tongues. Spiders have tongues????

My new Zentangle buddies!
Now I just have to get the drugs...caffeine will be easy.
Finding their tongues will be a little harder.
